Iron Meteorite - Fine Octahedrite IVA, highly weathered.

PETROGRAFIA:

The sample is very oxidized, reminiscent of the Santa Catarina meteorite, where certain parts are nothing but limonite. In the most preserved parts, it is possible to observe, without the need for acid attack, since the oxidation penetrated along the kamacite - taenite interface, revealing the fine patterned Widmanstätten structure (0.35mm lamella) of the IVA group. Identified as an octahedrite siderite, and despite the similarity with the ataxite of Santa Catarina they are distinct meteorites. Description given by M. E. Zucolotto.

HISTÓRIA:

The location and date of the finding were not revealed, it is only known that it was located in the south of the state of Santa Catarina. The meteorite received the name of Blumenau although it was not known where it was found. A sample of the meteorite was sent by agronomist Francisco Rzataki to CODISC (Santa Catarina Industrial Development Company), which sent it to the IPT (Institute of Technological Research of the University of Blumenau Foundation) in early 1986, thanks to an agreement made between these two institutions, within the "Free Mineral Analysis" program maintained by CODISC. Description given by ME Zucolotto.
